Why New Windows Take Weeks, and When to Start

People brace for window replacement as though it will be a long, disruptive project. It usually is not. A crew can do a single-story Deltona house of ten to eighteen openings in one to two days, working room by room and closing the house up each evening.

The time is all in front of that, and it surprises people who have not done it before.

Where the weeks go

Replacement windows are made to your openings. That is not a premium option, it is how the product works, and it is the reason no one can quote the job from a photograph or a plan set.

So the sequence is: quote, decision, measure visit, order placed against those measurements, manufacturing slot, delivery, install. The manufacturing slot is the long pole, and it is measured in weeks rather than days.

The honest way to find out how many is to ask, and to get the answer written on the quote rather than said on the phone. Lead time is a real commitment and a supplier who will not put a number on it is telling you something.

Why the number moves

Because Florida factory demand is weather-driven. After a storm affects the state, the sequence is always the same: damage assessments, then insurance claims, then a wave of orders, then a queue. Volusia County has had two recent rounds of this, with Nicole in 2022 and Milton in 2024.

Someone who decides in October that they want impact glass is joining a line behind everyone whose windows were broken. Those people are correctly ahead of them, and the wait reflects it. Materials and labor tighten at the same time, so the price behaves the same way the schedule does.

The comfortable months in Deltona

Late winter into spring, roughly February through April, for three reasons that compound.

Temperature. Rooms are open to the outside for part of a day while frames come out and go in. Doing that in July, when the nearest long-record station averages a high around 93 degrees and about a hundred days a year above ninety, means air conditioning the neighborhood for an afternoon.

Rain. Central Florida takes most of its 51 or so annual inches in the summer convective season, arriving in the afternoon with little warning. Crews work around it. The job is easier when they do not have to.

Queue position. Ordering before the season’s demand builds is the difference between a normal lead time and a long one.

Working backwards

If the aim is protection in place before the season starts in June, count backwards. Weeks of manufacturing. A week or two for measuring and ordering ahead of that. And time before that again for getting quotes and reaching a decision.

Starting in early spring is comfortable. Starting in late spring is tight. Starting when a storm already has a name is not a plan, it is a hope.

What does not wait

A few things move faster than the manufacturing queue.

A broken opening gets a temporary closure immediately, because a house that is open is a security and weather problem regardless of anyone’s schedule.

Repairs to sound windows are parts rather than custom orders. Balances, rollers, locks and weatherstripping are on a shelf somewhere, and a window that is structurally fine can often be put right in a single visit.

Stock-size units exist and can shorten a lead time, at the cost of accepting a size that approximately fits rather than one built for the opening. On a masonry opening that is usually a poor trade, because the difference gets made up with packing and sealant instead of a frame that fits.

The sequence that works

Decide about impact rating first, because it changes both price and lead time. Get quotes over the winter with the lead time stated on each. Order early enough that manufacturing happens before spring demand builds. Install in the cooler, drier part of the year. Let the permit and inspection close out behind the install.
