- Why do my aluminum window frames sweat?
- Because bare aluminum is an excellent conductor and the frame runs straight through the wall from outside to inside without a break. That makes the indoor face of the frame cold enough on a humid morning for water vapour in the room to condense on it. It is not a leak and not a glass problem: it is the frame acting as a bridge. Frames with a thermal break, or vinyl frames, do not get cold enough often enough for it to happen.
- Is vinyl the right frame for Florida?
- It is the volume choice here for good reasons. Vinyl does not corrode in humid, salt-carrying air, it does not conduct heat, and it needs no painting. Its weaknesses are that large spans need reinforcement and that color options were historically limited, both of which modern lines address. Aluminum still has a place where a very slim sightline or a very large span is the priority, and fibreglass sits between the two on both price and performance.
- Will new windows stop the whistling in a storm?
- Usually, because the whistling is air moving through gaps at a worn sash or a failed seal, not through the glass. A new unit closes those gaps with compression weatherstripping and a sash that pulls tight against the frame under wind pressure. What new windows will not fix is noise coming through the wall itself or under a door, so if the sound persists afterwards it was never the window.
- Do I have to replace all the aluminum at once?
- No. Mixing frame types across a house is common when a project is phased, and nothing about a vinyl window depends on its neighbours.
