Single-Hung Windows: common questions
- Why are almost all the windows here single-hung?
- Cost, durability and how they behave under wind. A single-hung has one moving sash instead of two, which means half the balances, half the weatherstripping and half the things to seize up in salt-laden humid air. It also seals well when wind pushes on it. Double-hungs are more common in colder parts of the country where the top-sash ventilation trick matters more than it does in a house that runs air conditioning most of the year.
- Can I put a different style in the same hole?
- Often yes. A single-hung opening will usually take a horizontal roller, a fixed picture unit, or a casement without touching the masonry, as long as the new frame matches the rough opening. What changes the calculation is egress: a bedroom window has minimum clear opening requirements, and swapping a slider for a fixed pane in a bedroom is not an option.
