Horizontal Rollers: common questions
- Why does my slider need two hands and a shove?
- Almost always the rollers and the track. Grit works into the bottom track, the rollers wear flat or seize, and the sash starts dragging on the track instead of riding on wheels. On an original aluminum unit the track itself is often worn into grooves by then, which no amount of new rollers will fix. Cleaning and new rollers is a real repair on a sound window and a waste of money on a worn one.
- Do sliders leak more than other windows?
- They leak differently. A horizontal track sits at the bottom of the opening and has to shed the water that lands in it, so its weep holes matter enormously. Blocked weeps mean a track that ponds, and wind pressure on a ponded track pushes water inward. A modern roller is designed around that drainage path; keeping the weeps clear is most of the maintenance the window ever needs.
- Can a wide opening take a single-hung instead?
- Not gracefully. A single-hung in a wide, short opening ends up either an odd shape or split into multiple narrow units with mullions in the way of the view. The usual alternatives for a wide opening are a roller, or a fixed picture unit flanked by two operable panels, which gives more glass and less obstruction if ventilation from that wall is not important to you.
